Hello! Welcome to the Shellac Stack Podcast Website. My name is Bryan Wright, and as a hobby, I enjoy collecting old 78 rpm records from the 1890s-1950s. For the past eight years, I have hosted various radio programs featuring records from my collection. Now, I'm pleased to offer an informal podcast version. For each program, I'll pull a stack of 78s from my collection of roughly 10,000 records and play them for you. Along the way, I'll try to tell you a little bit about them. Although I'm most interested in the jazz and dance bands of the 1920s-1930s, I'll try to feature a little bit of everything: old-time country, big bands, crooners, vocal quartets, vaudeville sketches, blues, gospel, pop, and plenty of oddball "novelties." Many of these records have never beeen reissued, and I play them as they are: scratches and all, so be warned!

When I started the Shellac Stack Podcast in February 2006, I planned to release a new 15-minute program with both sides of two 78s each week. I have since discovered that that is a bit too restrictive. The real joy of podcasting is that I can be a little more relaxed and informal than on my regular radio program; there's no pressure to finish "on time." So, I've decided to "loosen up" and play as many records as I feel like on each program and release them as often as I want (or have time to do so!). Some programs may be as short as 15 minutes, others as long as an hour. I'll try to post at least one new program each week, but some weeks I may post two or more, at other times I may take a week off. Since this is strictly a spare-time hobby for me, I'll put together new programs as I have time. The best way to be sure you get every program is to subscribe to the Shellac Stack RSS feed. The easiest way to do so is to subscribe to the podcast through Apple's iTunes music program. In iTunes, go to the Music Store, select "Podcasts" and search for "Shellac Stack." Then simply click the button to subscribe and all future programs will be automatically downloaded to your computer for listening at your leisure. Neat! If you prefer to use another Podcast client, use the following URL to subscribe to the podcast:

If you prefer to download the programs individually through your web browser, just select the show you want to hear from the list below. You may need to right click and select "Save target as" or if you're on a Mac (like me), hold the control button, click on the show you want, and select "Download linked file."

I don't have every 78 made (not even close), but if I do happen to have something you'd like to hear, I would be happy to play it for you. Or, if you feel so inclined, just send me an e-mail to say hi!
